The ALV was developed by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in coordination with the U.S. Army Engineer Topographic Laboratories. The ALV was developed in hope of obtaining a better understanding of image and vision technology. Through this ideal, the groups wished to provide a basis for future autonomous vehicles that could be implemented onto the actual battlefield. The ALV has been made self-contained with the use of sensory perception technologies and artificial intelligence. The lasers, video cameras and radar that feed data to a computer system allow for the robot's means of making executive decision about movement and reactions. This system is composed fo three parts: navigational system, the platform of the vehicle, as well as a vision system. The ALV is also comrpised up of the “multi-spectral three-dimensional scanner,” which will give information about distance and intensity (Lerner 156).
