He was born in the town of Vinci, Italy, and was raised by his father and his wife. In 1466 he began an apprenticeship under Andrea del Verrocchio, a famous painter and sculptor. Verrocchio was so impressed by Leonardo's artistic abilities that he allowed him to work in his workshop, alongside other renowned artists, like Botticelli, Perugino and Lorenzo di Credi. Leonardo eventually moved to France in 1516 at the invitation of King Francis I, where he died. Leonardo is recognized as an amazing artist, engineer, and scientist. He observed and studied many things, including: human and animal anatomy, weapon design, flying machines, art and sculpture. Some of his famous artworks include: the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, Madonna of the Rocks, and the Vitruvian Man. Additionally, Leonardo was a genius who pioneered new artistic and scientific tactics, like chiaroscuro, a contrast of light and dark components in painting; sfumato, a hazy effect in painting; and mirror writing, writing text backwards; he studied the human fetus and the stages of pregnancy; robots; and flying machines. He is the embodiment of the Renaissance Man.
