Aarseth was born in Bergen, Norway. He attended the University of Bergen, where he completed his doctorate from the Department of Comparative Literature. He wrote 'Cypbertext: Perspectives on Ergodic Literature', which originally was his doctoral thesis. The concept of ergodic text is introduced in the book, which is defined as a text that requires non-trivial effort to be traversed. See a sample chapter from his book. He has also been a major figure in video game studies. In fact, he may be considered one of the most prominent figures of ludologists.

Aarseth is now working at the Center of Computer Games Research at the IT University of Copenhaagen as the Principal Researcher.
