The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) was founded in 1984, a non-governmental organization collaborating with different trade associations in the "copyright-based industries" in the United States. The association defends and represents over a thousand American corperations. "Copyright-based industries" applies to traditional cultural productions which include television, music, software use, and applies to the distribution to sharing of information. IIPA makes culture reproduction for consumers more available and greatly reduces the cost of both reproducing and/or sharing intellectual property accross national borders.
Although IIPA works to spread and restrict intellectual property availability, it also monitors the enforcement of copyright laws worldwide and makes independent determinations that deceipher other nation's observance of international laws, suggests ideas for further restricting the American intellectual property worldwide. IIPA works in agreement with U.S. Trade Representative in determining suggestions that help restrict information sharing that impose consequences to public and private intellectual property.
