MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface is computerized composition software that allows the composer to access pre-recorded sounds and samples that have been preivously recorded. These can be one note samples, such as the sampling of a flute, or saxaphone. These one note samples can be altered in pitch, duration, and intensity using a MIDI keyboard. In this way, a composer can use a piano keyboard to write his or her melodies, and express those melodies simultaneously through any instrument of his or her choosing. In addition, MIDI software and keyboards can be used to call up an entire sampled section of a pre-recorded song. MIDI processing has completely revolutionized not only the creativity of music composition, but has also given individual composers greater powers of collaboration with one another. See Also
