Marcel Duchamp is arguably one of the most influential modern visual artists. Doing most of his works in the first half of the 20th century, Duchamp invented the "readymade", or the notion of calling something art that the artist merely finds already manufactured. An example being Fountain. This turned the art world upside down and marked the beginning of a movement that liberated art; set it free from being confined only in a high society gallery. Always the enigma, in Duchamp's later life he gave up art to dedicate his life to chess.
