Open source refers to the on going process of a product that allows not only the creator but others to help develop the product. The name “open source’ is said to have been officially coined at a conference for Netscape. Open source software is the name used for software that has released its source code and allows for free “usage, modification and distribution.”

Open source in general is a collaboration of many different people working together to generate a non-monopolized entity either by using it or modifying it in any way. Open source software operates in this same manner. Some open source software such as the wiki software is an example of collaborative software that allows for collaborative writing, brainstorming and learning efforts.
