The Spanish Civil War lasted for three years, from July 18, 1936 to April 1, 1939. The war was fought by the incumbent political party, the Second Spanish Republic, and its leftist allies against General Francisco Franco's right-wing Nationalists. Those on the Republican side had varied ideologies, from liberal democracy, to communism, to anarchy. Many industrial regions and peasants of Spain supported the Republicans because they wanted autonomy from any type of central government. However, the Nationalists eventually won the war and Franco established a dictatorship.

Main players on the Republic side of the war were: Manuel Azana, Francisco Largo, Caballero, and Juan Negrin, the Second Spanish Republic army and foreign volunteers in the International Brigades. Main players on the Nationalist side were: Francisco Franco, Nationalist Spanish army, Fascist Italy, and Nazi Germany.

The number of deaths, while disputed, was nonetheless vast. Estimates range from 300,000 to 1,000,000. However, many of the casualties were a result of mass killings by feuding citizens rather than military operations. The Spanish economy was heavily affected and took many years to recover.
