Biography

Daley Tocher

If the honor and wisdom and joy of such a reading are not to be my own, then let them be for others. Let heaven exist, though my own place may be in hell. - Jorge Luis Borges -

As of May 31st, 2006, Daley Tocher is a senior only a few classes away from obtaining his degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He grew up in San Andreas, California. San Andreas is a tiny town nestled within the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Northern California. Daley encourages those reading this never to visit it. He is pretty much a dweeb to the max. He has a hankering for computers and the forms of literature and criticism they spawn (See Also: Main Page), but he also likes a good deal of the modernism that emerged from Latin America (Borges, Marquez, Cortazar), along with science fiction and anything else that might have contributed to getting him beat up in high school. As far as fan-dom goes: he likes dance punk and hip-hop music, violent movies, reptiles as pets, pretending to be a robot, robots in general, and the playing and watching of hockey. After graduation, he will apply to graduate schools across the country to study English while working as a shoe salesman at Saks Fifth Avenue paying off debt and saving money to make his vision of Earth seem less big.

On English 194: "Instead of advertising my vocabulary and knowledge of the subject at hand, I'll say this: it's a breath of fresh air (scratch that, robots don't breathe) to have a class with few enough people to impart each individual voice with a sense of originality and specificity. If that ain't authorship, I don't know what is."

For this website, Daley Tocher has written Passive Creativity and Web 2.0.

Work Log

22:46, 31 May 2006 (PDT) Made my bio page.

23:14, 31 May 2006 (PDT) Creation of Web 2.0: Research Report.

14:40, 1 June 2006 (PDT) Initial draft posting of second research report: Web 2.0: Research Report.

12:51, 6 June 2006 (PDT) Removed Robotrock page and link from homepage.

23:26, 6 June 2006 (PDT) Re-added content to Web 2.0: Research Report and re-did Biblio entries.

09:43, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Reading Glossary, Objects, Research Reports for possible cross linking.

09:52, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Started cross-linking Boject items. Adopted the See Also format that Wikipedia uses to link to similar concepts. Stopping until I talk to the group and get this format approved.

20:25, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Noticed a problem when clicking a link to a Wikipedia page. The external link sent the viewer to a non-existent site. The problem was reading the MediaWiki code on our site being translated to Wikipedia's same code. Found on one of Alex's Glossary items. Fixed, and searching for other, similar errors.

20:34, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Noticed similar problem on most of Alex's links. He'll burn for making me do extra work. :)

20:40, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Tiffany seems to have added /'s to the end of the website on all her external links (example is the glossary item: Affinity Group), and they must be removed for the links to work. It is here and now that I decree my personal mission to be going through all the external links on the entire site, clicking them, and hoping they work. I'll keep things updated her.

20:48, 8 June 2006 (PDT) So the more I look at links, the more I feel I'll be doing code editing as the majority of my editing of the Wiki. A lot of Tay's early work used the external link code for internal links. This is actually rather common for other people too. It bothers the part of me that's OCD. I'm fixing it as I go through every Glossary, Object/ Research Report's external links and testing them. Also, Michelle frequently uses no link coding, so those too will be fixed.

20:58, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Standardizing the way people site Wikipedia as: Wikipedia's ______ Article instead of some variant of a link that reads wikipedia.org. Also clearing up the link descriptions. This lets users know more of where they are planning on going.

21:07, 8 June 2006 (PDT) Finished all the Glossary items. Calling it a night. Also, found a page Tiffany made (Spanish Civil War) that had no catagory tag. Fits well in objects, so I'm putting it there.

22:02, 11 June 2006 (PDT) Working on Creativity main page.

22:08, 11 June 2006 (PDT) Brooke's objects/glossary items have mistakenly been added to the Category: Content Templates. Removed this tag, as it is likely a copy/paste error.

22:43, 11 June 2006 (PDT) Finished editing/formating/correcting all external links in both Objects and Glossary listings and editing others issues that arose while doing so. I'd say there were anywhere from 20-30 completely dead links that now work. Continuing to do this sort of fixing on Research Reports. This is not what my link editing group assigned me, but it is an aspect that was left unnoticed and that NEEDED fixing, so I will continue.

23:30, 11 June 2006 (PDT) Research Report link fixing is harder. Finsihed all of Creativity Group's reports for bad external links and formatting internal links with the specifically internal linking code.

23:53, 11 June 2006 (PDT) Almost done with Collaboration Group's research reports. Ashley's external linking required much more tinkering than I expected to make it look like the rest of the class's. So tired. I'm planning on working a bit more tonight, then finishing up before Prof Liu looks at the site tomorrow AM.

00:00, 12 June 2006 (PDT) The external linking on Ashley's Collaboration: Mobile Phone Entertainment is so fundamentally different in format from every other report and so intensively different that it would be a waste of time for me, at this point, to edit it to match the others. I fixed her first report (Collaboration on the Internet:Social Networking Websites). I bequeeth Ashley to change the Mobile Phone one on her own... and continue to streamline the external linking on the last remaining reports: the Intellectual Property Group.

00:15, 12 June 2006 (PDT) Added my contributions to Description of creativity's study. Kept them brief, I feel the girls did too much information for it to truly be a summary.

09:39, 12 June 2006 (PDT) Formatted links on the 2 new Glossary/Object items added since last night.

09:56, 12 June 2006 (PDT) Most of Collaboration Group's links to Wikipedia site don't work. They formatted them all with a / or a | at the end and it deadens the functionality of the link. Changing is takign a while.

10:12, 12 June 2006 (PDT) Certain research reports have NO working external links. This makes fixing the links more of a joke than anything else. Why am I doing what people should have done themselves?

10:36, 12 June 2006 (PDT) Finally finished all Research Report external link fixing. This whole thing too way too much time. People added too many links without actually checking themselves if they work.
