http://yahoo.com///www.uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Uncyclopedia%3 I chose this picture because in many ways it is how I want our project to manifest; a new take on an old thing. Although we won’t be representing the novel so simply, we are hoping to use simple, everyday (21st century) pictures and imagery to represent a book written over fifty years ago. I am aiming to take ordinary pictures and have them coalesce into something extraordinary; not extraordinary in a sense of superb (although it will ideally achieve this regardless), but rather an effect that will be extra-ordinary.

This site’s insight changed the manner in which I thought of Ernie the piano player; I thought he was merely someone that Holden envied because he was someone people came to see play the piano. However, it makes perfect sense that subconsciously, Ernie is someone Holden despises because he has an immense talent that he uses to show-off instead of using it for a greater good. “Phonies” like Ernie are ever-present in Holden’s world, however, Ernie is one of the first that Holden seems to envy. Since our project commences at Ernie’s, I want to represent Ernie as someone Holden completely sees through and despises, instead of a half envious, half phony relationship we see in the original text.

Apple’s Garage Band

We will be supplementing our visual elements with audio tracks in order to make the experience more fluid and complete. I haven’t found too many piano tracks that suited Ernie’s showy riffs and progressions, so Dan and I will probably create our own track(s). Guitar band will allow us to create our own original track in a simple manner. Although I haven’t yet laid out the track, I can hear what I want in my head. On the surface it will sound mellow, yet it will then progress into a very intricate and convoluted piece, somewhat like Holden himself. I want to fuse Ernie’s jazz with something new age, in order to pay homage to the project we are to create; something old and classic, yet with a new age spin. The only way to vocalize what I am hearing in my head is to compare it to Dave Bruebeck’s Take Five. This will not be the only track we create. We will probably have two, or three other tracks. One for the beginning, which will be very simple and mellow, and consisting of piano and percussion. One for a potential sex scene between Holden and Sunny the prostitute, which I am hoping will materialize as a classy porn song, if that is even possible.

Adobe Photoshop CS3

Photoshop is the application we will be working with most. We have taken over a hundred pictures and we are aiming to intertwine them in order to have a very surreal look. Photoshop allows it’s user to do almost anything with a picture: overlap, blur, and go from black & white to color and vice-versa. Since the pictures are an integral element of our project, the manner in which we distort or alter them will be very sensitive and important. The picture that Dan posted on the class Wiki is what we are shooting for: a surreal, visually stimulating picture that engages the “player” and grasps their attention.
