Biography

Hayley Bartels
Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans - John Lennon -

Hayley is a junior [English ACGC specialization] and [Art History] major at the [University of California, Santa Barbara]. Hayley originally hails from the Midwest, Kansas City that is, and moved to California three years ago for a little adventure. As she originally began her academic career as an Art Studio major with a specialization in photography, Hayley still pursues her interest of expression through the arts through her studies in Literature and Art History, and in her free time as well. Thus, upon completing her degree at UCSB next Fall, Hayley plans to study in London for a semester and then return to the U.S. to continue her academic interests at the graduate level, hopefully, in Visual Communications. Hayley's literary interests include American contemporary and modern literature; she has a special interest in African American Literature, the Beats, and 60's counterculture. Some of her favorite writers include Hemmingway, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Toni Morrison. Of course she loves art especially the work of Sally Mann, Annie Lebovitz, Diane Arbus, and Robert Frank (photographers) plus Degas, Monet, and David Hockney. Hayley’s love of music has also found its way into her study of literature, as she is extremely interested in the work of Bob Dylan along with the American blues and folk traditions translation into literature and American society. Other musical favorites include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, The Allman Brothers, David Bowie, and The Velvet Underground, just to name a few.

On 194: Overall, Hayley believes that all components of art and literature are interconnected and in English 194 with Professor Liu, she hopes to explore these connections and concepts at a new level through the perspective of Digital Humanities.
